Here are the complete settings you need to configure your email client or application:
SMTP Server (Outgoing Mail): smtp.office365.com
This is the modern, preferred name, but smtp.live.com continues to work for backward compatibility.
Port: 587
Encryption: STARTTLS (Sometimes just listed as "TLS")
Authentication: Yes (Your full email address and password are required)
Username: Your full email address (e.g., [email protected])
Password: Your account password (or more securely, an App Password)
You might see both names listed. Here’s the simple explanation:
smtp.office365.com: This is the current, primary SMTP server name for Microsoft's consumer email services (Outlook.com, Hotmail, Live.com) as they have been integrated into the Microsoft 365 (formerly Office 365) infrastructure. This is the one you should use for new setups.
smtp.live.com: This is the older legacy name. It still works perfectly and is maintained for backward compatibility with older devices and configurations. You don't need to change it if it's already working.
In short: Both work, but smtp.office365.com is the officially recommended one now.
This is the most common reason for setup failures.
If you have two-factor authentication (2FA) enabled on your Microsoft account (which you absolutely should for security), you cannot use your regular account password in your email client.
You must generate a unique App Password.

Go to your Microsoft Security settings.
Ensure 2FA is turned on.
Find the "App passwords" section.
Generate a new app password for "Mail" or "Other" (e.g., "Thunderbird").
Use this 16-character app password in your email client instead of your regular password.
If you do not use an app password and have 2FA on, authentication will fail every time.
Is smtp.live.com valid? Yes, it is still valid and operational.
What is the preferred server? smtp.office365.com
What are the critical settings? Port 587 and Encryption STARTTLS.
What about 2FA? You must use an App Password if two-factor authentication is enabled on your account.
